March has been a crazy months for mixtapes and we here at JMHO are a little behind on our reviews. Before we go forward and review the latest tapes I wanted to give y'all some basis on what I consider a classic tape. Wale's 100 Miles N Runnin is one of my favorite mixtapes of the past 5 years and here's why..
The album starts off with Lets Ride.. This beat is so smooth and it sets the tone lyrically for the rest of the album. Wale's lyrics are hard to understand he has a certain type of subject matter that you almost have to know sports references and hiphop fashion to keep up. In this song he references some Detroit Lions WR Busts Carlos Rodgers and Mike Williams claiming he's not them" My favorite lines from this song are
I like bitches in air maxes without socks/
And when they wear makeup I'm like no sir/
I can't fuck with the altered/
sort of like a dike an an alter/
My next selection is Daytona squared. This is the sequel to Daytona 500 off "hate is the new love." Lyrically picking between the original and Daytona squared is a toss up, but I like this beat much more for Wales style. It is very laid back and is what I would consider timeless music.
Nobody has some DC flavor and isn't a typical party song but it can be played at my jumpoffs anytime of the day. Got a smooth little piano beat with witty lyrics all the way through.
I run the floor with the cords and the mic/ perform like Mike game 5/ I rock Jay 5's with reflector on the tongue/ I work like Dirk I'm respected by the Sun's like Fathers
That's some good Shoe and Sports head lyrics right there that I love.
The outro doesn't need any lyrical breakdowns. Please just put in your headphones and listen. I'm positive you will be impressed with what you hear.
This mixtape is a solid 9.5 and it's 3 years old and I still listen to it consistently. I give this the Sledge Stamp Of Approval! If you haven't listened to it swallow a knife.
SIDENOTE
I love how Wale is becoming more versatile as a song writer and a lyricist. I just hope he can get back to some of his roots with the Maybach Music Deal. He has blamed his label for picking his songs in the past and claims that won't be a problem in the future. I'm excited for the future even though his past 4 mixtapes have not equaled this tape in total quality.
