Hangover

The first trailer we posted last month was some skeet compared to this. I've tweeted it before and I'll tweet and blog it again #yearofthefacetattoo

Bourduax 7s

I could give a fuck about Wiz and Amber Rose. I'm happy for the taylor if he's happy though. But, the real reason I'm posting this video is for the Bourduax 7's he's rocking. These shoes have never been retro'd and I am expecting a frenzy for this at your local mall. I hate to hypebeast but these shoes have been announced for a year and this close to the release date what's the harm. They drop on April 16 and you can bet they will be on my shoe rack.

Fear Of God Review

First let me start this by putting my first impressions, which were written the day fear of god dropped: Let me preface this by saying I love the Clipse and Pusha T, but this tape off first listen did not live up to the hype. I think that we as fans expect too much out of artists, but this is especially so after countless delays. Pusha is not any less of a lyricist than he has been in the past, but I just expected more. This tape is a SOLID 7 and has potential to move up after a few listens. I was hoping for more original beats and production from Yeezy. I do expect his solo debut to be much better with the Louie Vutton Don producing for him.

This review has been one of the hardest for me to write up to this date. I love Pusha T and all of his music. I don't think it is possible for him not to bring great lyrical content to each verse he spits on. It might be hard for some to understand because of the coke metaphors, regardless they are quality lyrics. This tape does not disappoint at all in lyrical content fashion. When I first put the tape on I had the music bumping but I would say I heard it more than I listened to it. That's why it's important to give music a good run-through before you consider dishing out a rating. The initial response was a 7 and I can easily say it has risen since the opening day.

When liking an artist for so long and so much anticipation for a tape you as a fan are expecting an album. There definitely some phenomenal beats on here, however 1/3 of the tracks are recycled beats. I thought long and hard about this issue. Pusha T is an accomplished artist with AT LEAST 1 classic album under his belt. I believe he should be given some leeway when choosing not to drop all original content. However, as a fan I wanted more of the original stuff. We know who Pusha Thorton is, a dopeboy who feels bad about his past but also enjoys spending the money he has made from it. I don't want him to change who who is or change his subject matter, but one place I wish there was more creativity with this tape is with the beats.

Toast to progress as I'm staring out my condo/ Made it this far and I ain't never been a Tonto/ EEUUGHKK! as you compare me to a fucking rookie/ you can't respect the new school when you played hookie

For y'all that don't know Tonto was a Native American who worked with the Lone Ranger on TV to the demise of his own people aka a snitch. Then to have a little shot at the new school is classic Pusha. The beat is real smooth and has a great sample which I haven't been able to place yet (guess that sample hint)

Now I know some of you will say "you've been doggin him for not using original beats, how can this be one of your favorites?" the answer is point blank - Pusha kills this. There are so many lines that I could chose to highlight but this to me is why I like Pusha and he does a better job explaining it in 2 bars than I can in a 500 word review
"See my verse I let you tag along/ Swim in the oasis of this drug dealer Babylon"
He takes me to where he is on every verse and that's something 95% of rappers have trouble doing.

This is my favorite song on the tape. The thing that separates the Clipse and Pusha is they tell you about the triumphs and the mental tug of war they have for selling this powder and rocks. You also here some crazy punchlines on here. Not to mention beats like these are what I am expecting to hear on the CD.

I rep VA! Pusha T is VA! He made the Anthem for this great state. Needless to say he is one of my favorite rappers. I remember in high school people would have legitimate debates on who had the better album between Lord Willin' and Get Rich or Die Tryin. I have such a connection to this rapper on so many levels. But, I gotta keep it real with myself and everyone that reads this site. I wanted to give this tape a 10 sooo bad. I can't do it though because my credibility is on the line. This tape is an 8.25 with the potential to rise. There are classic songs on this tape that will be on my ipod until the end of time. But the lack of creativity in beat selection really held this back from being the album that it could have been. Add 4 more original tracks and remove the recycled ones you have the Mixtape of the Year. With that said you will most certainly see this on my top 10 at the end of the year.

I reside in VA/ Ride in VA/ Most likely when I die, I'm gon' die in VA

Covert Coup

THIS WILL BE LEGENDARY.. I was a little upset about the delay of muscle car chronicles but this more than makes up for it. Currn$y has been killing the game for the at least the past two years and years and great for us it doesn't look like it'll be stopping any time soon.

Don't get me wrong I love the Ski Beats and Curren$y work on the Pilot Talk series but this should be a nice change of pace. On the real I CAN'T make a post about Curren$y without dropping some good ass music.. ENJOY

Can't make a post about Curren$y without dropping some good ass music.. ENJOY

Killa Kyleon "White Cups" Music Video

I'm slowly but surely becoming a fan of Killa Kyleon. There's something dope about his flow that makes me want to keep my eye on him. I saw last night that he released a video to go along with his "White Cups" track off of his "Candy Paint & Texas Plates" mixtape and figured I'd share it with yall. Check it out and let us know what you think.

On & On & Beyond

March has been MADNESS not because of the tournament but because of the quality hip-hop music that has been released. Mac Miller adds another contribution to the pot with this Free 6 cut EP.

ON & ON & BEYOND

Just realized all but 1 songs are recycled :/

School First Liquor Later

An ambitious song title for Nick F out of Richmond. I like Nick F but this song gets extra props for shouting out the Rams. One day this man will get the respect he deserves.. till then hit up the DL link below

School First Liquor Later

Here's THE song off Season Premiere that I thought would make Nick F into a house hold name, I was wrong but the track still cranks.

David "HayeMaker" Haye vs Wladimir "Dr SteelHammer" Klitschko

This is a fight true boxing fans have been waiting for, for quite some time now. Since the Klitschko brothers will not fight each other, this is the best match-up possible for the heavyweight division. I don't want to get into boxing's problems, but I want to say they got it right this time. Here is a highlight video put together on youtube to get you hype for this summer's bout.

Here is my favorite boxing analyst Dwyer breaking down the fight. I will post his betting odds when they post on the Vegas Line.

Anti-Freeze

I am extremely impressed w/ Pac Div and their latest mixtape Mania! I really will be looking out for them in the upcoming future. They have a great sound/vibe bout their music and have some beats that have a distinct ol' school feel. Anti-Freeze-the most upbeat cut from the album, finally gets some visual treatment.. check it out

Here's the live version from the unnamed conference that we should have went to

Jet Life To The Next Life

Yet another BIG mixtape has dropped in the last 48 hours, this time from JMHO favorites Trademark, Young Roddy and Curren$y. The tape, titled "Jet Life To the Next Life." features production from the guys at Cooking Soul so expect nice samples and old school vibes, aka very good driving/chilling music. Don't sleep on this one, even if it means turning that KRIT tape off for a minute haha.. check it out.

2-35!!!!

FINALLY my squad, The Washington Wizards, have won their 2nd road game of the season against the struggling Utah Jazz..Reason to celebrate here in the nations capital....

Anyone who knows me well, knows I am a die-hard Wizard fan, probably one of the only people my age crazy enough to drop 2 Large on season tickets for this perennially losing team. While it has been a tough year in D.C. and there hasn't been much to cheer about (typical) , I'm excited for the future of my squad. We have a great owner in Ted Leonsis, a good amount of cap space, and a franchise point guard to build around in John Wall. We also have a nice young core of players to keep around for the ride in Jordan Crawford, Javale McGee, and Trevor Booker. With a top 5 pick guaranteed in this draft and a little luck, we could have our hands on a Derrick Williams or Harrison Barnes and then that's when things will get REALLL interesting here in the Nations Capital.. Haha, I know I'm a little bit biased but watch out for my Wiz Kids next year and into the near future. Riders and bandwagon fans are welcome now, but when we get those new Red White and Blue Uniforms (confirmed for next year, photos will posted on the site as soon as they are released) and start taking the league by storm, it'll be far too late...

I really hope I can look back on this a few years from now and smile, because being a lifelong Wizards fan is not easy...and all of us true fans are overdue for some good fortune. (fingers crossed)

Nardwuar

I think Nardwuar is the best interviewer in the game. I have so much respect for dude because he come's to an interview prepared with questions that haven't been asked before. So many of these hip-hop sites will ask the same stupid question "what's your top 10 chicks?" fuck outta hear with all that bullshit *NY accent*.. We here at #JMHO are going to try to be more creative and come to interviews having done extensive research on the artist. We want to bring something new to the game and are committed to do doing so. Here are some of my favorite Nardwuar interviews in honor of the legend..

Just because I respect the man doesn't mean I'm rocking that goofy ass appearel he does in the interview..

Rich Boy-12 Diamonds: Cartier Benjamin Mixtape

I know most of y'all (including myself) will be focusing most of your listening attention to K.R.I.T.'s new release tonight, but DO NOT sleep on Rich Boy's new tape (12 Diamonds: Cartier Benjamin) which was released earlier today. As with Rich Boy's past tapes, expect chest bumbing southern beats and well put-together verses about cars and trappin.... I know with this release and K.R.I.T.S. coming in the same day, my ipod is gonna need to be updated immediately and my gym session tomorrow is about to be reaaaaaaaaaaaaaal...gotta love new music, especially coming from two of the South's best MCs...

Enjoy yourselves with this one...

Rest in Peace DJ Megatron

Family members, friends and fans are mourning the murder of DJ Megatron, who was gunned down early Sunday morning on the streets of Staten Island.

The rising TV and radio star, whose given name was Corey McGriff, was shot in Clifton at about 2 a.m. and pronounced dead on the scene a short time later.

The Staten Island resident had just moved to a new house and his girlfriend recently gave birth to his third child.

"Everybody is shocked," said a close friend who asked not be identified. "He just had a new baby. He wasn't feuding with anybody. Everybody liked him."

His buddy said it was normal for Megatron to get back to Staten Island around 2 or 3 in the morning after working at a club or music event.

"I'm still shocked that somebody killed him," he said. "I can't even understand why. It could be somebody that he didn't even know. At that time of the night people do all kinds of crazy things."

"I can't see it being a personal thing because I don't know of anybody who had a personal issue with him," he added. "But at the same time, when you start getting success you have people who don't necessarily like that."

Law enforcement officials would not immediately confirm McGriff's identity. A police source said detectives have thus far not been able to track down an eyewitness to the murder.

Keith Robinson, who identified himself as Megatron's father-in-law, said his family was distraught.

"He was a good person," Robinson said, visibly upset, "Everyone's just shocked."

The Staten Island performer was a regular on BET's "106th and Park," and worked on HOT 97 two years ago.

A friend who arrived at the scene at about 4 a.m. said she talked to him a few hours earlier.

"He just called me," Lisa Torres said, "He asked me if I was going to [A FRIEND'S]party."

She became inconsolable as the news sank in.

"He's right there on the ground. I can't believe this," she screamed as she broke down in tears. "You're lying, you're lying! That's not Megatron right there!"

Cabin Fever Review

Wiz Khalifa has two styles: Everybody's favorite stoner, and I'm fucking your bitch and I'm a boss Khalifa. I like the 2nd much better. I heard of Wiz back in Prince of The City 2, which I was not toooo high on. However, when he dropped Flight School he had a huge fan in Sledge. Since the release of Flight school, we've seen more of the Super Stoned non aggressive flow Wiz, which has come to my dismay. Do not get me wrong I like How Fly, B.A.R., and Kush and OJ but the tapes always leave me yearning for the Wiz that got me first bumping his music.

Cabin Fever came at the right time. I know his album would be nothing like this but I'm glad to know the homie Khalifa still got this type of heat. This CD is not the most lyrical but Wiz never is. This is something where you bump in your whip with the woofers bumping, you roll to the club to, lift weights too, its some aggressive ass shit. I'm not a thug and thats why I like the tape so much. Wiz isn't claiming to to sell bricks or shoot you up, but he's reping Taylor Gang and just flossin his new found wealth. I can relate to that type of gangsta shit so much more than some gucci, not because I'm ballin (not yet at least), but because the closest I get to bricks is Mario Bros.

This tape is only 9 songs but all of them are pretty damn good. I do think "middle of you" doesn't really fit with the tone of the tape but it's still a good track. I play this CD all the way through and I have a feeling that I will be bumping this tape much more than his major label debut.

GET UP BITCH!

TAYLOR.GANG.TAYLOR.GANG great beat produced by LEX LUGAR.

I love this mixtape. I know this isn't the Wiz that the masses like but this isn't your opinion. I give this tape an 8.75! The only thing holding it back is it needs about 3 more songs and middle of you just doesn't fit the tone of the album. I hope this aggresive content Wiz doesn't retire after this major label debut. I was waiting for this album for quite some time and it was def worth the wait. MIXTAPE OF THE YEAR NOMINEE

M-V-P

I love the NBA. I have watched at least a game a day over the past 3 season #shoutout to NBA league pass. I am no expert but I will say I know enough and have seen enough to hold firm in my convictions. All of my opinions do not come form sportscenter they come from passing the "eye-ball test." Before I start my point I think Stan Van Gundy and his brother Jeff Van Gundy, are great for the league. We have so many coaches, players, and personnel that are scared of the evil dictator, David Stern. This week Stan Van stated the MVP has already been awarded by the media. I COULD NOT AGREE MORE.

I think Derrick Rose is an emerging player. I think he will be the guard to replace Jason Kidd on the Olympic team in 2012. He is explosive and has taken HUGE steps forward with his long range game. He has carried his team to the best record in the Eastern Conference. Buttttt I do have a gripe. He is a volume scorer. I can not stand a volume scorer because I relate that to inefficiency, his PER is 15th in the league. Also his +/- is not even the best on his team. This stat does not mean to much if I was comparing DRose to a player that plays significantly less minutes then him. However, I am comparing him to Loul Deng who has played over 200 more minutes.

I think that Dwight Howard and Lebron James should still be in the conversation and actually I would put them ahead on my ballot (if I had one) The stats don't lie.

PER PPG RPG APG BLK STL FG% 3PT
Dwight Howard 28.67(2) 23.1(12) 14.2 1.4 2.44(2) 1.3 .602
Lebron James 27.78(3) 26.3(2) 7.4 6.9(13) .64 1.4(25) .501 .337
Derrick Rose 22.84(15) 24.9(7) 4.2 7.8(10) .64 1.1 .440 .340

Lebron has the most stats in ranked the top 25 between the three. However Dwight Howard is unquestionably the best defensive player in the league, and there is no stat for that. This is not a run-away race by any stretch. But to give DRose the MVP while looking at his +/-, PER, and FG% is ignoring some of the most critical stats when looking at impact on the game is mind boggling. I will say that DRose's team is the best in the East and that should stand for something. I am not objecting to DRose winning this award, but this should be a hot debate going on right now, but instead it's an afterthought because it's a foregone conclusion who the winner will be.

I wrote this with lingo I hope all of y'all understand if there are any questions about the +/- stat or the PER stat please wikipedia them.

@sledge_mylez & @The_Big_Rogg will be having a playoff podcast for all y'all hoops heads.. 40 games in 40 nights coming soon

Lay it Down

To follow up my last post I wanted to drop a few songs I like to put it down to.. These are all recent artists cuz no way I'm gonna compare The Weekend to all time greats. Sledge might help your pipe game with this post #justsayin

Disclaimer if you got no stamina.. this post will have no relevance to your sexual performance or bitch getting capablities.

House Of Balloons

I am going to be honest, I don't like this tape that much. Maybe it's because on twitter this tape was getting hyped to be as good as some Drake R&B which is ludicrous. I want some feedback to see how others feel.. I will say there are some decent love making records on here but as of my first few listens, None will replace ANY songs in my current "panny dropper" playlist.

HOUSE OF BALLOONS

Pewter Foams

I love kicks.. I have been collecting and rockin' them HEAVY since I was in 9th grade.. Unfortunately I stunt in a suit and tie now-a-days, that doesn't stop me from getting a few essential pair every year. This past Saturday, one of those pairs dropped, the Pewter Foams. I know I am a little late but I wasn't trying to HypeBeast. Y'all can get yours online at select retailers.

If I Die Today

We post a lot of underground and up and coming artist on #JMHO and we really haven't given the stalwarts of the game their just due on the site. With that said check this brand new Cut of the Carter IV dropping in May. I really hope this Carter resembles the first and second installment A LOT more than the third.. But only time will tell. In the meantime check out the clean version

IF I DIE TODAY (CLEAN)

Dreamin'

Here are the official visuals for the single of BIG K.R.I.T. returnof4eva which drops next Monday. I love this video and the song itself, we at #JMHO are all dreaming for something bigger not only when we are sleep but when were awake. Enjoy..

100 Miles N Runnin

March has been a crazy months for mixtapes and we here at JMHO are a little behind on our reviews. Before we go forward and review the latest tapes I wanted to give y'all some basis on what I consider a classic tape. Wale's 100 Miles N Runnin is one of my favorite mixtapes of the past 5 years and here's why..

The album starts off with Lets Ride.. This beat is so smooth and it sets the tone lyrically for the rest of the album. Wale's lyrics are hard to understand he has a certain type of subject matter that you almost have to know sports references and hiphop fashion to keep up. In this song he references some Detroit Lions WR Busts Carlos Rodgers and Mike Williams claiming he's not them" My favorite lines from this song are
I like bitches in air maxes without socks/
And when they wear makeup I'm like no sir/
I can't fuck with the altered/
sort of like a dike an an alter/

My next selection is Daytona squared. This is the sequel to Daytona 500 off "hate is the new love." Lyrically picking between the original and Daytona squared is a toss up, but I like this beat much more for Wales style. It is very laid back and is what I would consider timeless music.

Nobody has some DC flavor and isn't a typical party song but it can be played at my jumpoffs anytime of the day. Got a smooth little piano beat with witty lyrics all the way through.
I run the floor with the cords and the mic/ perform like Mike game 5/ I rock Jay 5's with reflector on the tongue/ I work like Dirk I'm respected by the Sun's like Fathers
That's some good Shoe and Sports head lyrics right there that I love.

The outro doesn't need any lyrical breakdowns. Please just put in your headphones and listen. I'm positive you will be impressed with what you hear.

This mixtape is a solid 9.5 and it's 3 years old and I still listen to it consistently. I give this the Sledge Stamp Of Approval! If you haven't listened to it swallow a knife.

SIDENOTE
I love how Wale is becoming more versatile as a song writer and a lyricist. I just hope he can get back to some of his roots with the Maybach Music Deal. He has blamed his label for picking his songs in the past and claims that won't be a problem in the future. I'm excited for the future even though his past 4 mixtapes have not equaled this tape in total quality.

Nardwuar VS Odd Future

Nardwuar is one of my favorite interviewers of all time simply because he has his own interview style and he always bring along a bunch of cool gifts that have something to do with the person he's interviewing. Here he interviews Odd Future in what might be one of the funnier interviews I've seen.

Pharoahe Monch-W.A.R.

Pharoahe Monch's 3rd solo album "W.A.R." has been released today. The album boasts guest appearances from Immortal Technique, Styles P, Phonte, Royce Da 5'9, Jean Grae, and even Citizen Cope. Not surprisingly, Pharoahe is his usual dope self. I highly suggest this album. Go buy it at Target, FYE, or Best Buy. Or you can get it from iTunes. Link located below the cover.

Pharoahe Monch-W.A.R.

Who is Atma?

So I had to give a shout out to one of my favorite underground rappers just doing his thang jus doing his thang.

So you probably have never heard of this cat but I think hes doing a great job bringing knowledge and overstanding to the rap game. You might be reminded of the Jedi Mind Tricks or Immortal Technique but I assure you this guy be defined in a league of his own. His collaborations with the Moleman and producer Panik are just too sick, this is what I think of when people say underground hip hop

His story is definitely unique, mofo is deep. I'll give you just a taste but you can check out the rest here

He got stabbed in the late nineties during a fight and while recovering realized there was so much more to life, it was then he started his rap career. A year later he became an ordained monk and studied as a monk for the next 5 years before returning to hip hop a changed man forever.

All I ask is that you listen with an open mind, I'm not saying this guy is right about everything but listen to what catches YOUR ears.

Fear Of God

I have been waiting for this tape since last fall and finally it has arrived.. review coming real soon

First Impressions: Let me preface this by saying I love the Clipse and Pusha T, but this tape off first listen did not live up to the hype. I think that we as fans expect too much out of artists, but this is exspecially so after countless delays. Pusha is not any less of a lyricsist than he has been in the past, but I just expected more. This tape is a SOLID 7 and has potential to move up after a few listens. I was hoping for more original beats and production from Yeezy. I do expect his solo debut to be much better with the Louie Vuton Don producing for him.

Guess that Sample X Money Matters (prelude)

So I was getting groceries from the store the other day and this song just pops in my head, I could only hear the tune not the words...it kept bugging me and buggin' me...see if you can put a name to the song that used this sample

I'll give you a hint it starts with Bone

but what I'm getting at isn't just the song, I'd say majority of songs in hip hop deal with money in some way and I'm going post a few songs that I think address it the best...look for the next one soon.

Peace.

Random Songs

Last night at work I was rockin to some hip-hop jams from the 90s and I heard a few that I forgot existed. I thought they were dope so I figured I'd share some random ones with you. Enjoy

Red Cup Music

My man Chevy Woods, formerly Kev Da Hustla, just dropped his new tape Red Cup Music...
Expect some good production and some chill rhymes from Chevy, who you all may know him from his features on Cabin Fever, as well as my top 10 mixtapes I dropped on twitter, where his Pilot Shit mixtape was featured.

Peep the artwork, Roll and/or Pour something, whatever you do and give March Madness some background music...

Nate Dogg Tribute Mix

This was actually done back in 08 by DJ Steve1der as a best of Nate Dogg mix...it definitely makes for a great tribute though. Figured I would share it with you guys. You can either listen to it here or download it for yourselves at the bottom of the post.

Rest in peace Nate Dogg

A legend amongst us has passed away. Will never be forgotten. R.I.P.

R.I.P. Nate Dogg (August 19, 1969 – March 15, 2011)

This is not a good day...arguably the GREATEST hook master in hip-hop passed away yesterday. There's no way you haven't heard his voice. He's blessed tracks from artists such as Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Tupac, Warren G, Ludacris, Xzibit, Fabolous, Freeway, Eminem, Mobb Deep...the list goes on and on. He was also a huge figure in the G-Funk Movement. When I think G-Funk, I think Dre, Snoop, Tha Dogg Pound, Warren G, and NATE DOGG. The songs I posted are songs that showcase his smooth voice and a couple show his mastery of hooks.

All About You

Expect a more detailed tribute later but I thought I would post my favorite Nate Dogg hook in honor of the legend.. Here it is

Malcolm & Martin-Movement Music (Produced By Marco Polo)

I want to thank the people on Twitter for always suggesting artists for me to check out. After hearing a lot of talk about Malcolm & Martin, I decided to give one of their songs a listen. I'm glad I did. I'll admit it took me a minute to get used to the first guys voice but once I did I was all about this track. Dope lyrics over a beat by one of my favorite producers, Marco Polo. Check it out!

Pharoahe Monch f/ Jean Grae & Royce Da 5'9-Assassins

Yes, I'm aware I've posted a lot of Pharoahe Monch songs lately. Well, he keeps releasing heat that needs to be shared. Yet another track off of his upcoming album W.A.R. (coming out March 22nd) has been circulated on the web. This track starts off with an eerie intro that suddenly jumps into an upbeat exciting track. Give it a listen and like always, let us know what you think. Song is under the picture.

Gods'illa-Sal's Pizzeria

Check out this newly released track from the DMV's own Gods'illa off the upcoming CPR Blendtape which will be hosted by the one and only Erykah Badu. Check this new track out and let us know what you think.

Pusha T Feat 50 Cent-Rain (Produced by The Neptunes)

New Pusha T track featuring 50 over a dope piano driven Neptunes beat. I fucks with this track man!!!

OGDK Review

I got put on to Dom Kennedy by Rizzle not to long ago. He recommended From Westside with Love, this tape was near classic status so this tape had a lot of hype to live up to in my eyes. I am proud to say Dom didn't disappoint with OGDK. This whole tape sounds like an album and flows together quite nicely minus one hiccup. If you are looking for some complex, over your head, mind bending bars, you will not find them here. This is riding music at it's finest. It's a tape you just pop in and you don't have to press skip.

When I think of the west coast I think about beautiful women, weed, and a laid back mindset. I hear Dom spit I get the vibe that I'm riding down the block in my low rider with some daytons peeping mami's on the avenue. His lyrics take me to a happy chill place with dimes around. So despite him not being the most lyrical he gets credit for having rhymes and delivery that I can visualize and relate to.

Here are a few of my standouts from the tape:

This song is without a doubt my favorite. I can't wait to bump this in the summer with the windows down. This is classic Dom Kennedy right here.

This beat and song can only be described as WEST COAST. I fuck with how dissed Flex for somewhat dissin 2pac. I respect him standing up for his coast and arguably the best rapper ever.

OGDK gets a rating of 8.5/10
I fully anticipate this tape to make my top 10 tapes of 2011

Sampling

One of the reasons why a lot of the older heads don't like the way new beats are made is because it's not innovative. They basically find an old song that sounds good, loop it, and say theyve made a beat. I can't blame them because sampling costs so much nowadays. Back in the day you could get away with sampling whatever the hell you wanted. Not so much now. There are people out there waiting for you to sample something without paying just so they can slap you with a lawsuit. Because of this, I can't be too mad when someone takes one sample and loops the shit. My personal opinion is, if it sounds dope...use it. It makes for a good song and some of the younger folks will try to find what the sample is and it will expose them to some of the artists from way way back.

I just wanted to show a quick example of how sampling used to be. One of the coolest things to me is when a producer takes samples from various old school songs, puts them together, and the samples sound like theyve belonged together since day one. Here's an example. This track by Main Source is called "Looking At The Front Door." Large Professor sampled from numerous different songs and put it all together on one track...and it worked. The sample breakdown is after the video.

The main musical part of this beat comes from a Donald Byrd track called "Think Twice." The sample is at 1:47. Obviously Large Professor did some filtering and other things to freak the sample.

The "Chicka Boom Boom Boom" part of the song comes from a song by the Pazant Brothers fittingly called "Chick A Boom." Sample is at 1:23.

The ending part comes from a Third Guitar track called "Baby Don't Cry." Sample is at 1:10

There's a couple more samples on this track like Detroit Emeralds-Youre Getting A Little Too Smart which is the track Large Pro got the drums from. Unfortunately the version that starts off with only the drums isn't on youtube.

Anyway, thats just a little something to show you how back in the day producers used to sample from all sorts of tracks and put them together to make some dope beats.

Guess That Sample

Dexter Wansel-Theme From The Planets

This should be a really easy one for most people. I'm personally a big fan of Dexter Wansel and especially this track, so any song that samples it usually gets a thumbs up from me. Although I will criticize and say the dudes that have sampled this recently aren't doing much besides looping it.

Lykke Li - I Follow river (Tyler the creator remix)

A remix a buddy of mine put me on to. I LOVE this crazy synth filled remix "Tyler the creator" has made. He has been working VERY closely with Chad and Pharrell. A track will be out soon :)

Rocks Report

Michael Rocks of the Cool Kids drops his solo mixtape - The Rocks Report. I guess Chuck has been busy producing for Chip the Ripper and other artists to add vocals to another group album. He has some good features and the tape offers 25 all original tracks. Click the link to see how this Cool Kids stands on his own.

THE ROCKS REPORT

All Of The Lights (Remix)

I love the original version and the remix stacks up nice. There is a few subtle changes to the beat but it still cranks. I gotta give Drizzy the nod for the obvious question of "who has the best verse?" What y'all think?

Lil B-Illusions Of Grandeur

Jean Grae-You Don't Like It (So What?)

Jean Grae just released a track off her upcoming "Cookies & Cream" mixtape. It showcases her lyrical abilities along with her trademark humor. If you've never heard of Jean before, may I suggest her album with 9th Wonder "Jeanius." Anyway, check out her self-leaked track "You Don't Like It (So What?)"

Lil B ft. Jean Grae & Phonte-Base For Your Face (Prod. By 9th Wonder)

I GUARANTEE this song is going to piss purists the hell off. Oh well. Even though pairing lyrical giants Jean Grae and Phonte with Lil B may sound like an odd pairing, it actually comes off as a pretty decent track. It's not only notable as the first time Lil B has been a track with those two, it's also the first 9th wonder beat that Phonte has rapped on since they resolved their issues.

While far from a contender for song of the year, it's a cool little track that makes for an entertaining listen. Check it out and let us know what you think.

R.I.P. Biggie

We all know the story about Biggie and all of that so I won't get into too many details. All I'm going to say is the dude was an incredible lyricist and if you don't agree, you just might want to get your hearing checked.

Due to the fact that I'm only 23, I didn't get to watch Biggies career flourish the way a lot of the older heads did...at first I only knew "Big Poppa" and "Juicy." I loved both songs but I still hadn't heard anything that made open my eyes and say "WELL DAMN!" That is until I bought Funkmaster Flex's 60 Minutes of Funk Vol. 4. That CD contained a freestyle track from Biggie called "The Wickedest" and that craziness was what earned Biggie my respect.

Then Vinney suggested the "Ready To Die" album to me. I went and got that album and immediately realized that not only could he flow/say crazy lines, he could make ALBUMS. Almost every song was crazy. Including this one where Biggie plays two characters in the same song and is definitely one of harder tracks on the album.

If you're wondering what the lines are that have words censored, they are "I don't give a fuck if youre pregnant" and "Bitches get strangled for their earrings and bangles." Not sure why they got edited seeing as how way worse things had been said on record during that time period. Anyway, one of my favorite songs from the Notorious one has to be this track right here.

The track works perfectly. Premier was absolutely on FIRE with the beats in the 90s and Biggies flow/raps were a match made in heaven for this beat.

You're probably wondering why I don't have any selections from Life After Death. Well, I could only pick 3 songs. Both Ready To Die and Life After Death are classics. The 1st song I posted represents what first made me a huge fan of B.I.G., the 2nd is probably one of the first songs I had ever heard where someone was saying some hardcore shit that sounded 100% believable, and the 3rd song is one of the first songs that had me bobbing my head to the beat so hard that I almost snapped my neck.

In my mind, theres only 2 Notorious BIG releases, Ready To Die and Life After Death. I see those other 2 releases as just attempts to make more money. Of course I also think Born Again was much stronger and realistic than Duets which was an atrocity.

Well there you have it. I was going to post my 3 favorite Biggie songs, but ended up posting the 3 songs that were most important to me recognizing why BIG was such a beast. R.I.P. to Christopher Wallace. An unforgettable legend.

Rest In Power

Notorious BIG was known by many names, BIG, Biggie, The Black Frank White, but to me he's known as the best rapper ever. He was the most intellectual gansta rapper of his time and still has bars that would put 99% of rappers today to shame. This man was 24 when he passed, which is way to young. He had so much more of a contribution to give to hip-hop. However, he will live forever through his bars, here are my top 3 Biggie Songs.

This song is just so powerful. Every bar he spits he give's it an intensity and vigor that is one of his trademarks. The verse is so griddy it still makes me get a stank look on my face when I hear it.. like did he just say that?! I still remember when my Dad heard the lyric "stabbed her brother with an ice pick" lol. Let's just say I never saw that CD again. Even though the CD was long gone I still would spit the verses verbatim almost every day at the lunch table with my homies

Let me preface this by saying I struggled for very little in my life. I didn't have it all but I was fed and had shoes on my feet. This song shouldn't relate to me.. but it did. I could feel for Big and I felt for his struggle. He took me to his life and I could visualize it all. Whenever I was stressed about the little things in my life I'd play this song and just let off steam.

This song make's me feel so wavy. I bump this all the time in the whip with the windows down and some shades blockin the haters. The beat is just so smooth and even though BIG technically only has one verse on the song, we all know he wrote Puffy's verse on the track.

My boy Hewie told me something a few months back " hip-hop is the only genre and industry where legends aren't respected" I agree wholeheartedly! This doesn't apply to BIG but don't let any other legends die before you realize their worth.. Go support artists and never forget legends. Happy BIGGIE day

Rest in peace Christopher Wallace

Christopher Wallace made music we can all relate to in some sort of way. These are the top three songs that motivate me and I can relate to in some sort of way.

Biggie Smalls... May 21,1972-March 9, 1997

In honor of the Great Biggie Smalls, We here at JMHO have each decided to pick our 3 favorite Biggie Tracks of all time and share them with you all....

Biggie had a profound effect on all of us here at JMHO...

My personal memories center around chilling at my man Vinneys house and having nothing but Ready To Die, Life After Death, and Born Again, on repeat all day, evvveryday, just dissecting the lyrics and being in awe of the ease in which Biggie crafted masterpieces..

Big ups to the Man, The Myth, The Legend, Biggie Smalls

This might not only be one of my favorite Biggie songs but maybe one of my favorite songs of all time, period... The beat which is sampled from Debarge's "Stay with Me" hits perfectly and creates the perfect backdrop for Biggie to deliver verse after verse of heat..

Favorite Line: Isn't this great? Your flights leaves at eight, her flights lands at nine, my game just rewind...
Lyrically I'm Supposed to represent, I'm not only a client, I'm the player president.

Warning is by far one of the hardest tracks Biggie ever came out with...I don't think I've ever met a Biggie fan who doesn't have this one in their top 5.

Favorite Line: Who the fuck is this? Paging me at 5:46 in the morning, cracka dawning, now im yawning, wipe the cold out my eye, see whose this paging me and WHY?

(Might be my favorite intro of all time)

This one was always cool because you got a chance to see 2 MC's on top of their games go back and forth from verse to verse, trying to one up each other, but at the same time showing the other mad respect.

Favorite Line:
So instead of makin hoes suck my dick up,
I used to do stick-ups
Cause hoes is irritatin like the hic-CUPS
Excuse me, flows just grow through me
Like trees to branches
Cliffs to avalanches
It's the praying mantis
Deep like the mind of Farrakhan
A motherfuckin rap phenomenon

Collapse - Oil (Part 1)

I'm sure you've heared the murmurs....the rumblings on you know...the world ending in 2012....well I'm here to set the record straight if you've got a minute, but before i get to the doomsday stuff i want to talk about something that may be a lil closer to home.

Gas....it connects just about everyone on this planet, from plastics, from your toothbrush to tires. Transportation. Electricity. Heating. Literally everything.

What if I told you we were running out...don't take my word for it, do some research. I'll help you out a bit as I highly recommend watching this film. I am not a doomsdayer but a man of commonsense and hopefully you will hear some too as we explore this 4 part series about things to come.

A lil more Spitta for you all...

As I was searching for more "Muscle Car Chronicles" clips for my earlier post, I came across a very very sick track that many of you all probably haven't heard from Spitta.... I'm not positive what album he plans to use this track on, if any, but it features Fiend who has done some good work with Curren$y (Raps and Hustles, Executive Brass) in the past, and a very cool video that uses some well placed Anime that cleverly syncs up with the lyrics.

Check It Out..

New Curren$y Album preview as well as first look at New artist Da$h

This clip dropped a little earlier on 2dopeboyz and shows a preview of both Spitta's new album "Muscle Car Chronicles" and a newcomer who I never heard of, Da$h (who actually spits some heat) . Both of their albums drop on March 15th...def looking forward to Spitta's new shit, buuuut might have to look a lil closer at this Da$h dude...

Here is another track that is planned to be on "Muscle Car Chronicles"....
I'm looking forward to this album not only because I love anything Curren$y does, but also because its going to feature a lot of live instrumentation which your boy allllllways messes with....
check it out, it also features local talent Tabi Bonney. DMV RAAAAISE UP.

The Neptunes studio session for "Star"

The finished product... 702 feat. Pusha T

Early Neptunes studio session

This is Pharrell with some help from Chad in the studio creating "In the Midnight Hour" with Tasha Ramos. Probably my all time favorite studio session...

Finished song... I know I know... old slow song. I am huge Neptunes fan.

Brand Roy's Knees

I was talking to Rizzle on Twitter tonight and the subject of Brandon Roy and his degenerative knees came up.. He is one of those players that we will always wonder "what could have been?" I don't want to go into a long spiel of breaking down his game but I will say is he could do everything on a basketball court. The videos will say the rest.

Raekwon-Shaolin VS Wu-Tang Review

Whether you've been listening to hip-hop for your entire life or you're just a casual fan, theres a good chance you've heard of Raekwon. From being one of the original 9 members of the Wu-Tang Clan, to releasing the undeniable classic that is "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx", to being featured on Kanye Wests highly anticipated 5th album, to even being on a remix of a Justin Bieber song. The man has done it all. Now he's released his 5th album Shaolin VS Wu-Tang which boasts guest appearances by fellow clansmen Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, and Method Man, as well as performances from old and new friends like Nas, Busta Rhymes, Black Thought, Estelle, Rick Ross, and Lloyd Banks. Lets get into the album.

Upon first look, you'll notice that the RZA is nowhere to be found. So what? He's not needed for every single Wu solo album. Besides, all of the producers on this release put in work creating a minimalistic landscape that serves merely as a vehicle for the lyrics. And when it comes to lyrics, everyone delivers. Raekwon's story telling abilities are still as sharp as ever while every single guest brings their all to the table.

Stand out tracks include Silver Rings, Crane Style, Dart School, Molasses, and Shaolin vs Wu Tang, amongst others.

I can't recommend this album to everyone simply because the minimalistic return to 90s sound isn't something that everyone can get into. Also some of the songs are TOO SHORT! But if you've been a Raekwon fan since day one, the minimalistic 90s sound is something that you're into, and you can get over the fact that some songs aren't long enough, you'll love this album.

Pros: Dope lyrics from everyone involved, album is rewarding after multiple listens, cohesive album

Cons: Not for everybody, the minimalistic beats might bore some folks, and a handful of the tracks aren't long enough for some listeners

Rating 8/10

Sidenote: If you buy the album on iTunes, you get 2 bonus tracks. If you buy the album at FYE, you get a free T-Shirt! Decisions Decisions
