RIP Gil Scott-Heron

This is a tough one to stomach. I had been in NYC for my vacation for only a few hours when I found out and I was shocked to hear that one of my favorite artists of ALL TIME had passed. I knew he hadn't been in the best health for a while now but to actually hear that he passed was crazy.

For those that don't know who Gil Scott-Heron is, you need to get up on him. Especially if you're a fan of hip-hop. He has influenced many of your favorite artists and his music has been sampled by numerous producers. Songs like Common's "The People", Black Star's "Brown Skin Lady", Mos Def's "Mr N*gga", and many many others.

There's so much info I could post on dude but I personally think this is one of the artists that you need to listen to and get into on your own. Once you do, you'll be wanting to check out all of his albums. I recommend starting off with "Pieces Of A Man" as that is considered his greatest by many people even though I like his "Bridges" & "Secrets" albums more.

I will post some songs though from various albums. Check em out.

"The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" I always felt like this song was a predecessor of hip-hop songs

"Home Is Where The Hatred Is" Great song. Sampled by Kanye for "My Way Home"

"The Bottle" One of his biggest hits.

"Angel Dust" Another one of his hits.

"Madison Avenue" One of my favorite songs.

"Vildgolia" Another favorite of mine. I love the way the hook gets more and more powerful after each verse.

"Angola, Louisiana" Great track

"Grandmas Hands" Its close but I think this version is better than Bill Withers version

There are MANY MANY MANY more songs I could post that I love but this post is just to get you familiar with a few tracks so you can go find out about the rest of his music. I personally suggest "Pieces Of A Man" "Winter In America" "Bridges" "Secrets" and "Reflections" to start off with. Great albums.

RIP Gil Scott-Heron. Your music and lyrics were and will always be incredible.
