Main Source-Breaking Atoms

As some of you have probably noticed by now, I tend to post a lot about old school hip-hop. I do it because I feel that to truly appreciate a genre of music, you have to know its history. So todays mini history lesson will be about Main Source and their first album "Breaking Atoms." (released 1991)




Main Source consisted of Large Professor, Sir Scratch, & K-Cut (although Large Pro left later and was replaced by Mikey D) This album is considered a cult classic by many for good reason. Not only is it a great album, it also contains some of the greatest beats done by Large Professor (who also raps on the entire thing) AND contains what I believe is the first appearance by Nas.

If you don't know who Large Professor is, check out his production credits. He's done beats for a lot of artists including Eric B & Rakim, A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, Busta Rhymes, AZ, Organized Konfusion, Joell Ortiz, and many many more. Anyway, lets get to the album

One of the things that made this album so great was, like De La Soul's 3 Feet High & Rising and Beastie Boys-Pauls Boutique, the use of a wide array of samples. What makes this album even more important though is that some of the samples used later became some of the most used samples in hip-hop.

Check out their single "Just Hanging Out" I'm sure some of you have heard that horn sample before.




And like I said before, I'm pretty sure this album is the first time Nas appears on record. He appears on the track "Live At The BBQ"



Then there's their biggest hit "Looking At The Front Door"



And the DJs even get a chance to shine on the laid back smooth cut "Scratch & Kut."



Of course I'd go to hip-hop hell if I didn't mention the classics "Peace Is Not The Word To Play" & "Just A Friendly Game Of Baseball." The latter being one of the more serious pieces on the album.

Anyway, if you want to check out a hip-hop album from the early 90s that has been unfairly pushed into cult-status, definitely check out "Breaking Atoms." If you have a true love for hip-hop, there is a very good chance you'll LOVE this album.

B.Dolla & DJ Tech-Neek

These two VA standout producers just dropped this instrumental track on twitter earlier tonight. I'm jamming to it right now and might write a quick 16 for the hell of it lol.. this beat just gets my mind flowing.. I know both of these guys personally and they have taken great steps forward in mastering their craft. Real recognize real and I respect the hustle.

Nardwuar "DO IT YOURSELF"

This is a video of our favorite interviewer Nardwuar giving a speech in Vancouver BC. The video is very inspirational/funny and was a great chance to see Nardwuar in a different setting. It's enlightening to hear all the different things he has done throughout his career to get where he is today. Everyone's path is different but along the one I am on right now I will be sure to take some knowledge from this pioneer. Check out the video below

The End is Near

Well tonight was the first episode of The Office where Dunder Mifflin Scranton had a new manager. This episode featured Will Ferrell and I was VERY excited because I'm a HUUUUGE fan. Sadly, this episode was a bit of a disappointment. There were funny parts, but this definitely was one of the least funny episodes of this awesome season.

Basically, he comes in and is beginning to feel out the people of the office, EVERYBODY is sucking up to him and Michael Scott gets very jealous and tests their allegiance. Of course, their allegiance is to their new boss, Deangelo Vickers (Ferrell). Ferrell's character was just very awkward and uncomfortable. It just didn't do it for me, but there are still 3 episodes that he has to redeem himself.

Wii 2

It looks like Nintendo will be announcing a successor to the most popular gaming system of this generation, the Wii. This video will give a little more insight than I am willing to give in this post. The main reason I am posting this is because if Nintendo is about to enter the next gen, Thus Sony and Microsoft can't be too far behind. I personally don't know what else the systems (PS3, XB360) can do at this point.. but that's why I just play the systems and don't design them



This guy is kinda quirky/funny maybe even a little creepy but I'm sure he will garner a few laughs.

TweetBot

On twitter we consistently have battles over which twitter client is the best.. Some, myself included believe echofon is the best and others believe its TweetDick oh i mean TweetDeck. Here is a new entry to the competition TweetBot! I haven't DL'd the app yet but I'll be sure to give you my thoughts later, until then check out the video

Black Thoughts 2

Well Done almost made my top 10 mixtapes of last year.. I think Tyga is the most underrated member of YMCMB.. which is not saying much because everyone seems to be overhyped on that side.. I never listened to the original Black Thoughts so I'll go back and listen to that for comparison's sake.. Regardless, I'm expecting a lot with this tape

Southern Lights

I thought Donnis last mixtapes Fashionably Late, and Diary of Atlanta Brave were a little overrated/underwhelming.. That will not stop me from giving this mixtape a listen.. not the most lyrical rapper but at the very minimum a song or two will make the iPod
